Mountain Spirits and Flowing Water: Religions of East Asia through Film

This course examines both the historical development and current content of the diverse and rich religious and philosophical traditions of East Asia (including shamanism, Daoism, Shintoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism) through film. In order to better contextualize the significance of “modernization” and “westernization,” we will also refer to Western philosophical traditions and ideas (i.e. Christianity and Communism) to which these East Asian traditions responded.

이 수업은 동아시아의 역사적 발전 및 현재의 다양하고 풍부한 종교적, 철학적 전통의 내용을 영화를 통해 다룬다. 기본적인 강의 목적인 동아시아 전통의 철학적 개념을 이해하는 동안, 수업에서 다루어지는 모든 시대와 요소를 통해 우리는 또한 현재의 살아있는 문화를 이해하는 방법 및 그 개념을 배울 수 있다. 또한 기독교와 사회주의(공동체주의) 등 동양 전통이 서양 철학전통 및 관념과 관련성 있는 점을 언급함으로써, ‘현대화’, ‘서구화’ 등 지난 반세기 동안 아시아에 영향을 준 의미를 더욱 적절히 맥락화 할 수 있을 것이다.
